"Wow, you are going
to Africa! You should keep a blog of your adventure!"
I have heard this comment a number of times as I share about my upcoming plans to go teach in Tanzania. I can't help but wonder if they just totally slept through the part where I said there will be no running water and reliable electricity. How in the world can I keep a blog if I don't even have internet? So mostly, I have dismissed the suggestion to start a blog. Until recently that is.
You see, I feel this tug on my heart, that perhaps I should be willing to open up and share what God is doing in my life. I truly believe He interacts with us every day and there are so many miracles if we really take the time to look for them. Like my student, Liz*, who at 17, who had so much conflict with her parents that the state stepped in and put her in the foster system. Her life has been completely turned upside down and yet, she shows up everyday to my calculus class and does everything she can to learn the material. I find that totally amazing. She is a miracle in my own classroom.
The purpose of this blog is to make me more intentional about seeing what God is already doing in my life and to share that with others. And better yet, I want to invite you into the journey and to share what God is doing in your life. I believe God is multifaceted like a radiant diamond, and each of us gets a glimpse of His beauty in a way that others don't get to experience unless we share it with each other. I would so enjoy hearing about what God is doing in your life too. Together, we are unveiling His majesty!
You might be thinking, "Your subtitle says "Experiencing the Extraordinary God in the ordinary" and well, going to Africa isn't very ordinary." Yeah, you are right. Living in Africa isn't exactly on everyone's to-do list. But in the few times I have been there, I have noticed that day-to-day life can be incredibly mundane. You still have to cook food, wash your clothes, deal with inconveniences that make you late or completely change your plan for the day. There are mornings you are excited to get up and embrace the day and there are other mornings where all you want to do is curl up in bed and let the day's work take care of itself. But God is at work in the midst of it all, both here and in Africa. So really, I think we are all living ordinary lives that become extraordinary when God is involved. It really isn't so much about my story or yours - it is HIS story. I am excited to see how it unfolds!
